The IB programme states, “Learning about and through the arts is fundamental to the development of the whole child, promoting creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and social interactions.” IB also believes that the “Arts engage students in creative processes through which they explore and experiment in a continual cycle of action and reflection. Such creative processes are seen by the IB as the driving force in learning through inquiry.”
The Westlake Academy Fine Arts department embodies this philosophy by seeking to stimulate critical and creative thinking skills, as well as develop articulation of thoughts through a wide range of media, technology, and new experiences. Through the arts, we find a universal language that fosters communication among all people. As such, the arts are an essential component of a balanced education and development of the whole child.
