Athletics, Extracurricular Activities and Food Service Protocols

Plans for our Athletics, Extracurricular Activities and Food Service are outlined below:

Administration will continue to evaluate the risk level related to assemblies and special events whether they are planned indoors or outdoors (field trips, spectator sports, assemblies, social events by affiliates, etc.). The following indoor events, but not limited to, are postponed until further notice:

  • Dances
  • Assemblies; 
  • Luncheons; 
  • Pizza day;
  • Ice cream day;
  • Senior lunches;
  • Pep rallies;
  • Field trips;
  • Overnight camps; 
  • Travel that requires overnight stay;
  • Fairs.

The Academy will attempt to reschedule all overnight trips in the spring.   

The Academy does not provide transportation to and from school.  The Academy does, however, provide transportation to and from sporting events, field trips and other school related travel.  The following protocols will be followed:

  • All bus drivers will be trained in COVID-19 safety procedures.
  • Each bus will be limited to one student per seat or two students from the same household.
  • Capacity of the buses will be based upon 50% occupancy.  This translates to the following capacity limitations:
    • Iron - 9
    • Fire - 10
    • Blacksmith 1 & 2 - 24
  • Hand sanitizers will be available on all buses and will be required by students and staff when entering and exiting the bus.
  • Masks are required to be worn at all times while on the bus.
  • Seats, handles and high-touch areas will be disinfected after each bus usage using the 360 Mist Sprayer.
  • When possible, bus windows will be opened to allow outside air to circulate in the bus.
  • When traveling to and from events, the bus will not make stops such as QT.
  • Athletes will continue to be required to ride the bus to contests.  Parents may check their child out to take them home.

The Academy believes in the value of physical activity including athletics.  As an IB World School, athletics provides our students with real world experience in balancing competing demands on their day to day lives such as work life balance.   

 

Please note that the following guidelines for athletics is current as of 4:00 pm, August 13, 2020.  As with any of the Academy’s plans during the pandemic, the following components are subject to change due to any new State and county mandates. 

 
  • Westlake Academy Blacksmith Athletics will adhere to all guidelines set forth by the State of Texas, Tarrant County Public Health Officials, the CDC, Christian School Athletic Fellowship (CSAF)/Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship (TCAF) and Westlake Academy Administration along with the Board of Trustees.
  • All Westlake Academy staff members and non-Westlake Academy staff that provide services to Athletics will be trained in COVID-19 safety protocols. 
  • Guidelines for spectators, guests, opponents, practices, and games at Westlake Academy will be sent through the Athletic Department on an ongoing basis.  Requirements for contests at an opponent’s site will vary depending on the school and will be shared prior to each event.  
  • A new feature for 2020-2021 is the Live Streaming of home games for the varsity sports.  Live Streaming of other sporting levels will begin 2021-2022. 
  • With the delayed start dates, sports teams will have fewer regular season games.  
  • Registration fees will be adjusted due to the limited playing schedule.  Please do not register at this time. Families will be notified when registration begins.
  • Athletes that have a physical on file from the 2019-2020 season will not be required to have a new physical. However, the family history questionnaire on page one of the form is required.
  • For students that do not have a physical on file for the  2019-2020 season, you must have a physical performed by a physician. 
  • Field House and Physical Education locker rooms are closed until deemed safe. 
  • Practice times will be staggered for sports in order to allow for social distancing.
  • Masks are required for all athletes, coaches, support personnel.
  • All practices are closed to the public.
 

The following schedule will be used for the opening of fall athletics:

  • Week of August 10 & 17: Summer Conditioning Training (All athletes)
  • Week of August 24: Summer Conditioning Training (All athletes) (Wed/Thurs Only)
  • Week of August 31: Sport Team Conditioning/Training (Mon-Thur)
  • Week of September 8: Team Practices officially begin 
  • September 17: First date available for Soccer/Volleyball Games
  • September 18: First date available for Games Football, Cheer, Drumline
  • September 19: First date available for Cross Country Meet

The Academy believes in the merit of student participation in Clubs and After School Activities.  The research is clear that students who are involved in student life are stronger academically and develop healthier social and emotional skills.  As an IB World School, Clubs and After School Activities provide our students with opportunities to express their passion and serve others.   

  • All Westlake Academy staff and non-Westlake Academy staff that provide services to Clubs and After School Activities will be trained in COVID-19 safety protocols. 
  • Westlake Academy will adhere to the TEA recommendations regarding After-School Activities.
  • Westlake Academy Clubs and After School Activities will be suspended during the first four weeks of remote learning during the 2020-2021 school year. 
  • As students return to campus for in person learning, Clubs and After School Activities registration will open on September 21 and will close on September 28.  Club meetings and After School Activity will begin on October 5, 2020 depending on the weekly schedule.
    • All cafeteria staff will be trained in COVID-19 safety protocols and will wear masks and gloves while serving students. 
    • Students and staff will be trained in COVID-19 safety procedures for the dining hall and lunch periods.           
    • All lunches will be served in the classrooms for the first few weeks of face to face learning. 
    • Students will begin eating in the cafeteria once it is deemed safe to do so.               
    • No parents/visitors during lunch at least for the fall semester.
  • For your child’s safety, one way entrances and exits will be established. 
  • Buffet food lines and the salad bar will be closed until further notice. 
  • Seats, tables, door handles and high-touch areas will be disinfected between lunch periods.
  • Students may bring lunch and snacks from home in a container that will not require staff to assist with opening and closing. 
  • Lunches and snacks  must follow all guidelines as set in the Student-Parent Handbook. 
  • Water fountains and microwaves will not be available for use.
  • Personal water bottles may be used and should be marked with the student’s name.
  • No food delivery by Parents until further notice
  • No Outside Vendor food delivery for 2020-2021

Lunch Purchase Options:

  • Option 1 - Purchase from Viandas:
    • Families that purchase lunch will place their order daily through Viandas website (MSA).
    • Lunches will be packaged in sealed containers
  • Option 2 - Students Bring Lunch From Home
    • For younger children, lunch should be in a sealed container that does not require assistance to open
    • Lunches must follow all guidelines as set in the Student-Parent Handbook.
