The PYP Strings Program is open to Westlake Academy students in grades 2 - 5. The lessons are conducted in small group sessions with a maximum of 10 students per session. The program is dynamic and fluctuates with the playing levels of students. The groups are divided as beginning, intermediate and gaining proficiency; because of this, classes may be a combination of students in different grade levels. A student’s proficiency level is determined by a parent/student survey and lessons that are taken outside of school. Assessment of performance groups is finalized by the instructor in the first strings sessions and groupings may change throughout the year at the discretion of the instructor.
Our strings provider is through DeCapo music and our instructor is Mr. Hyunseok (Hank) Chang. Mr. Chang holds a Bachelor of Music in Performance (viola) and a Master of Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea. Mr. Chang has also obtained a M.M. in Orchestral Conducting from the University of North Texas. He has served as a conductor and viola instructor for the Prague Music festival. We are certainly privileged to have Mr. Chang at Westlake Academy as our Strings Instructor.
Mr. Chang is in regular contact throughout the year via email and parent meetings regarding student performance and practice and will welcome the opportunity to meet with parents regarding the scope of the program. Please visit your grade level website from the Parent Portal and click on PYP Strings Program under "Support Learning at Home" for more detailed information and short video clips on posture, bowing, bow grip and the Essential Elements booklet, a reference for lessons and practice at home.
Westlake Academy values the strings program as part of the education of the whole person and as part of the performing arts philosophy of an IB World School.
