MYP Service as Action

 

In the MYP, service requires that students are able to build authentic connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community.  All MYP students are expected to engage in meaningful service activities in which they work with others in a shared commitment towards the common good. There are seven learning outcomes for service. Through service as action, students should:

  • become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth
  • undertake challenges that develop new skills
  • discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities
  • persevere in action
  • work collaboratively with others
  • develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding
  • consider ethical implications of their actions.

 

Students should meet these learning outcomes over the course of MYP; they are not intended to be met by every student in every service experience.  After each service activity, students reflect on the experience and the learning outcome(s) experienced.  (MYP: From Principles into Practice May 2014: 24)

 

In order to encourage meaningful and authentic service, MYP students will be held accountable through a leveled point system for their service experiences, rather than through a system of counting hours.

Isolated service experiences that are not directly connected to units of inquiry.

 

 

 

 

 

Example: volunteering at a fundraising event

 

 

Ongoing service experiences that are not directly connected to units of inquiry.

 

 

 

 

 

Example: serving as a regular volunteer at a nonprofit organization

Meaningful service experience that is initiated and organized by a student or teacher and directly connected to a unit of inquiry.

 

 

Example: help run a school recycling program inspired by a science unit taught within the global context of Globalization and Sustainability

 

 

Service as Action Leadership: initiating and organizing meaningful service that is directly connected to a unit of inquiry.

 

Example: Inspired by a Language Acquisition unit within the global context of Fairness and Development, create a service organization in which WA students tutor recent immigrants in English.

All MYP students must fulfill Westlake Academy service requirement of 18 points per school year for successful completion of MYP. Service experiences and reflections must be documented in ManageBac and approved by the service as action supervisor(s).

 

MYP students who earn more than 25 points per year will receive a certificate of achievement for going above and beyond in Service as Action.
