Back-to-School Plan 2021-2022

Dear Westlake Academy Families,

I want to begin by thanking every one of you for your tremendous help navigating this past school year. There were so many unknowns regarding COVID-19 when we began our fall semester in August of 2020, but with your help, we were able to work together to provide our students with the best learning experience possible.  And let’s talk about our students. WOW! What can we say about their perseverance and willingness to adapt during these trying times? They along with our teachers and staff were truly inspirational in the face of adversity and emerged stronger because of it. We are so proud of all of them.

Now, we turn our attention to next fall and the 2021-2022 school year.  The rate of vaccinations continues to increase while the numbers of positive cases in and around our community and campus decrease.  We truly feel that we are moving in the right direction and are looking forward to the summer and the coming school season. While there is no crystal ball to show us how the fall will definitively look, we wanted to share with you our plan for our return to campus and the various levels of change that would occur in the event COVID cases rise throughout the year.

Below you will find a summary of the protocols that have either been eliminated or relaxed for the fall semester. Additionally, we have not yet received any updated guidance from the Texas Education Association (TEA), Tarrant County Public Health, or guidance from other public health agencies related to COVID-19 protocols. We are very hopeful that we will continue to experience a low case count of the virus and that school will look and feel very much like a traditional school year experience for our staff and students. Thus, the information below is subject to change based on additional guidance we receive before the start of the school year OR a significant rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.

  • Masks and desk shields will not be required on campus; however, the use of protective layers is a personal preference, and each family and staff member should feel comfortable making their own decision on this matter.
  • Playground equipment will be open for use by the students.
  • The lunchrooms will return to a less restrictive environment as we will remove the plexiglass dividers on the tables.
  • Athletics will return to pre-COVID school year procedures with fans attending games.
  • As a collaborative culture is at the heart of an IB World School, collaborative projects, small group work, and other shared activities will resume as part of our units of inquiry.
  • We will not require staff or eligible students to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. We encourage you to seek a medical recommendation from your physician to determine if it is in your best interest to obtain the vaccine.
  • We will be educating in-person with all students and staff returned to campus for face-to-face learning.
  • Any student who is not feeling well should stay home and contact the school nurse.
  • Westlake Academy will continue to provide hand sanitizer throughout campus and encourage everyone to practice good hygiene.

We are anticipating and planning for a return to a more traditional school year configuration without all of the protective layers we instituted this past fall. Our Board of Trustees will meet at the beginning of August to finalize plans for the new semester and we will update our parents upon completion of those discussions.

We are appreciative of your continued cooperation and assistance in keeping our Academy community as safe and healthy as possible.  If you have any questions about our protocols, please contact us via email at [email protected].

Thank you again for all of your help this year,

Amanda DeGan
