Special Education
Mission
In alignment with the Westlake Academy mission, vision, and values, the department of Special Education will:
- Identify students with disabilities
- Provide individualized and multifaceted services
- Support the development of skills, personal independence, self-determination, self-advocacy, and community participation
- Support and educate district staff and community toward a better quality of life for all.
Through Special Education services, Westlake Academy provides appropriate educational opportunities for students with disabilities. By individualizing services in accordance with each eligible student's learning needs, students are prepared to pursue life-long learning and become contributing members of the community.
Statement of Philosophy
As inclusive programmes, we recognize that certain students may need additional support to assist them in their learning. Our teachers scaffold and differentiate learning methodologies within the classroom to accommodate learning differences. We understand that some students need more support outside of the classroom and through specialized instruction.
Support for students with special needs, which includes physical, emotional, behavioral, and learning difficulties, is provided through the following: Response to Intervention (RTI) Team, Reading Specialist, Section 504 or Special Education.
Westlake Academy faculty and staff maintain a high degree of collegiality and professionalism. Collaboration between teachers, support teams, students, parents, and administrators is essential. In doing so, we are empowering all learners to achieve their highest potential.
