Middle Years Community Service Projects
The Middle Years students at Westlake Academy are required to complete 30 hours of community service. This is an aspect of the Middle Years Program that runs throughout the years (grades 7-10.) The majority of the students have already completed a number of hours.
Some of the activities completed are described below: Many students take part in the Arbor Day festivities held every year in October. They spend the whole day helping out with the running of kid’s activities, serving in the Beverage Booth, assisting with the food court and the pony rides. Their attitudes and contributions are excellent and the day could not work as smoothly as it does without their great help.
A small group of students run a Christmas Around the World celebration for the students of the school as well as other community members. They work diligently, meeting with Westlake Town members, preparing to hold a Christmas extravaganza fit for a king!
We have also had students participating in activities in their local community. Many are engaged in church outreach activities, while others are helping the elderly in their respective communities. Students also started a mentoring system in the school. This is a program that has been enthusiastically received by students and teachers alike. Through this program students build greater relationships with other members of the school, creating and setting an excellent example for all. Other activities have included: guitar lessons for PYP and MYP students as well as WA teachers given by MYP musicians, collecting shoes for local children in need, collecting blankets for Russian children in need, collecting items for Troops in Iraq, visiting soldiers in the airport before and after deployment, and so much more!
