The IB DP is designed for students from ages 16 to 19 years. It engages students in a rigorous broad-based pre-collegiate curriculum during their last two years of secondary school. The DP maintains its strengths as an inquiry-based liberal arts curriculum that incorporates the best educational practices from around the world. These practices focus on critical thinking and problem solving through a constructivist approach to learning. As such, students are expected to not only construct their own knowledge from authentic learning experiences, but also to deconstruct acquired knowledge. Examining “how we know what we know” allows students to deepen their understanding of the curriculum.
In addition, Westlake Academy aligns its DP curriculum and requirements with Texas Education Association standards. Through the IB learner profile, theory of knowledge course, extended essay requirement and service expectations, the DP has earned a reputation for high, rigorous standards and for pedagogical leadership as a college preparation program. The IB promotes international mindedness, not as an alternative to a sense of cultural and national identity, but as an essential part of life in the 21st century. Our students live in a global society that becomes smaller with every technological advance. As such, students are encouraged to think globally and act locally.
At the end of the senior year, students take a series of external exams. Based upon mastery, students are awarded the IB Diploma. The success rate of students at Westlake Academy is consistently above the world average. It is important to note that colleges are interested in students who take the most challenging and rigorous curriculum available. The DP is considered to be such a curriculum. Westlake Academy IB diploma students experience a very high acceptance rate by most colleges and universities. The strength of our school lies in the integrity of programs and the open relationship between the home and the school.
Welcome again and please know that my door is always open to parents and students, alike. Your questions, suggestions and comments play an important role in our ability to clarify and continually improve the learning environment at Westlake Academy.
