From the Bradley Library at Westlake Academy:
Our students have the opportunity to participate in reading challenges this winter! Please read on to learn more about each specific reading incentive program.
Six Flags Read to Succeed
Read to Succeed is an exciting program that encourages students in grades K through 6 to read for fun. Students who complete six hours of recreational reading earn a free ticket to Six Flags! The program is available to teachers and schools at no cost to participate, and it's a great way to motivate kids to read. The parent letter and reading log are available from your child's teacher.
In honor of National Read A Book Day, I am including a link to a Washington Post article that discusses the key components of time and choice and their relationship to reading for pleasure!
Washington Post Article: If we stop telling kids what to read, they might start reading again.
Westlake Academy IB World School Librarian
Westlake Academy PYP students and teachers welcomed back award winning author Susan Stevens Crummel. Her 2015 visit was such a success that we invited her sister, illustrator Janet Stevens, to Westlake. This presentation was generously funded by a grant from the Westlake Academy Foundation and Westlake Academy House of Commons.
During this visit, students had the opportunity to get a book signed by both author and illustrator. Many students purchased the author's books in previous school years to be autographed and added Janet Steven's signature to their books.
