Westlake Academy Students Named National Merit Semifinalist and Commended Students
Dr. Mechelle Bryson, Executive Director of Westlake Academy, proudly announced the school’s National Merit Semifinalist, Ryan Parkey, and four Commended Students, Kelsey Hassell, Alex Nguyen, Julian Sanders and Mitch Thompson in October.
“Our commended students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.6 million students competing for this title across the nation,” Bryson said. “As Ryan Parkey advances to the next level of the National Merit Scholarship program, we celebrate his impressive academic accomplishment.”
Merit Scholar winners are selected by a combination of high test scores, outstanding academic record throughout high school, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received.
“This is important to me,” said Parkey. “It’s an honor to be considered an academic champion at Westlake. It’s competitive here and the opportunities to succeed helped each one of us prepare for college.”
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a not-for profit organization that underwrites scholarships with its own funds. Additional scholarships are underwritten by approximately 420 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC’s goals of honoring the nation’s scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.
